A bridge that was closed for much of yesterday afternoon has now reopened, after an incident was brought to a 'safe conclusion'. 

Officers from Cleveland Police, Redcar RNLI and Cleveland Fire Brigade were called out to Newport Bridge, Middlesbrough yesterday afternoon (Sunday, March 31). 

Emergency services were on the scene for around six hours before the incident was wrapped up safely. 

Three coastguards - Redcar, Hartlepool and Amble - all also responded to the incident 

A spokesperson from the Hartlepool Coastguard said: "The team was paged alongside Redcar Coastguard Rescue Team to a multi-agency incident on Newport Bridge.

North East Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust (including members from the Hazardous Area Response Team, HART) Cleveland Police RNLI Redcar and Cleveland Fire Brigade. We were on scene for around 6 hours before the incident came to a safe conclusion.

"A big thank you to Amble Coastguards who were also tasked to bring the Area 5 HM Coastguard NE incident support vehicle to provide hot drinks and shelter.

"Remember, in an emergency at the coast, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard!"

The bridge reopened around 6pm yesterday evening, Cleveland Police said.
