A row of North East shops was ‘evacuated’ after a fire broke out at a fish shop.

Cleveland Fire Brigade confirmed they were called to a fire at Acklam Fish Bar on Acklam Road in Middlesbrough shortly before 10:30am on Wednesday (March 27).

They confirmed they deployed four fire engines to the scene and urged the public to avoid the area.

A person at the scene told The Northern Echo the shops had been evacuated following the incident.

A Cleveland Fire Brigade spokesperson said: “Cleveland Fire Brigade were called on 27/03/24 at 10.27am to an incident at Acklam Shops, Acklam Road in Middlesbrough.

The Northern Echo:

“Fire in fish shop. Four fire engines currently in attendance from Coulby, Middlesbrough, Stockton and Thornaby.

“Please avoid the area if you can”.

Cleveland Police confirmed they helped firefighters manage crowds at the scene.

North East Ambulance Service (NEAS) said they deployed a clinical team leader to the area but were stood down at the scene.

A NEAS spokesperson said: “We were called to a fire at a property on Acklam Road, Middlesbrough at 10.55 this morning.

“We dispatched a clinical team leader, but were not required and were stood down at the scene.”
