The North East woke to blustery weather with wind whipping up sandstorms on the region's beaches this morning (Saturday, March 23).

The Met Office has forecast a blustery and cold day with sunny spells and showers.

Some of the showers will be heavy with the risk of hail and thunder. A gusty northwesterly wind will make it feel cold, especially when compared to of late. Further showers are likely through this evening, though most will fade away overnight leaving clear spells. Winds also easing. Turning cold with a rural frost possible in places. Minimum temperature 2 °C.

Winds will slowly ease as the day progresses, so feeling a little warmer as a result. Maximum temperature 11 °C.

According to the Met Office the outlook for Monday to Wednesday is: Low pressure is likely to dominate through this period, bringing heavy showers and longer spells of rain throughout.
