Detectives have praised two survivors of child abuse for their bravery as their attacker was jailed for six years.

James Williams, 63, from Middlesbrough appeared at Teesside Crown Court on Friday, March 22 after being found guilty of nine historical sexual offences against a child.

An investigation by Cleveland Police's CAVA Team (Child Abuse and Vulnerable Adults) was launched after the victims reported the abuse they suffered and Williams was arrested.

Williams denied the offences but was subsequently charged and following a trial was convicted on February 12 of eight counts of indecent assault and one count of indecency with a child.

Temporary Detective Sergeant, Natasha Barber, said: “I would like to thank both victims for their bravery throughout this investigation, I cannot commend them enough.

“Williams denied the offences and both victims had to relive the trauma that he inflicted on them as children.

“Thankfully, the jury saw through his lies and Williams is now behind bars and will be subject to conditions for the rest of his life thanks to the actions of these victims.

CAVA Detective Inspector Nicky Barker added: “I’d remind anyone who has experienced sexual abuse that it’s never too late to report to police.
