A “fearsome” waterfall in County Durham has been named one of the most “amazing” in the UK and could be just the place for your next adventure.

High Force in Barnard Castle featured among other waterfalls in locations such as Devon, Cumbria and the Scottish Highlands, on a new best list by Country Walking Magazine.

The publisher added: “There are fine examples of plummeting H2O all over the country – these are just a few of our favourites.”

Country Walking Magazine explained: “For some reason, High Force, in the River Tees, is often mistakenly labelled England’s tallest waterfall.

“At 21 metres it’s actually a bit of a toddler.

“But don’t let it hear you say that because what it lacks in height it makes up for in sheer power.”

The magazine added: “The record it does hold is having the biggest volume of water roaring over its edge, which is why it’s such a fearsome animal.

“The thunderous rumble, the spray, the deadly plunge pool…try telling High Force that it’s a small waterfall.

“Pay a fee (£3 adult, £1.50 child) to park a short stroll away, or see it for free along the Pennine Way, which runs along the south side of the River Tees.”
