A man admitted a string of thefts in court on Saturday (March 16) morning.

Paul Methven, 37, from Newton Aycliffe, was arrested on Friday (March 15) for a string of thefts.

He was later charged with 11 counts of shoplifting and one of making off without payment from a petrol station.

Appearing before Magistrates in Newton Aycliffe on Saturday morning he admitted all 12 offences.

He was remanded in custody pending sentencing.

Police in the town thanked retailers for helping them with the investigation.

A spokesperson said: “Thanks once again to our amazing retailers who have provided all the evidence we need to get a positive result.”
