A Met Office spokesperson said: "A band of rain, locally heavy, especially on western hills, will become slow-moving and linger during the day.

"Drier and brighter, with occasional sunny spells developing to the east of higher ground during the day.

"A windy and mild day. Maximum temperature 12 °C.

"Band of rain, locally heavy, especially over western hills, will gradually begin to edge back northwards overnight. Dry with some clear spells and cooler across Northumberland."
