A County Durham driver has tried to get out of a motoring offence by saying that they were 'following the sat nav' on the road they were travelling on. 

On Sunday (March 10), the driver was pulled over after they were spotted travelling the wrong way on a roundabout on the A688 in County Durham.

After avoiding a collision on the stretch of road after the dangerous 'stunt', police pulled over the car and spoke to the driver, who gave the excuse that they were 'following the sat nav'.

Despite the excuse, police reported the driver for dangerous driving and gave advice to the motorist.

Following the incident, a spokesperson for Durham Police said: "The driver of this vehicle travelled the wrong way around a busy roundabout on the A688, miraculously avoiding a head-on collision with oncoming traffic.

"The driver said he was ‘following the Sat Nav’.

The statement goes on to say: "Reported for careless driving and suitable words of advice given."

This incident comes after a similar one in December last year, which saw a County Durham driver cause concern and hilarity after telling police that she had no insurance because she was a 'careful driver'. 

At the time, Durham Police warned other drivers after the bizarre encounter, which saw the woman, from Newton Aycliffe, stopped on Thursday (December 14).

The woman, who was driving a Mitsubishi, also had no tax or MOT as well as no insurance, with police reporting her to the police.
