A person was taken to hospital this morning following a crash between two cars on a busy crossroads in a County Durham village this morning (Friday, March 8).

Emergency services were alerted to the collision at the crossroads of Sacriston, near Chester-le-Street, at about 7am.

Ambulance crews treated one patient at the scene before taking them to hospital.  

The road, at the junction of the B6312 Witton Road and B6532, was blocked for some time, while the cars were recovered. 

A Durham Police spokesperson said: "Police were called at 6.55am today (March 8) to a two-vehicle collision at Sacriston crossroads.

"One person was taken to hospital as a result of the collision.

"The road was blocked for a short time while the cars were recovered. Traffic is now flowing freely."

A spokesperson for the North East Ambulance Service said: "We were called to a two-vehicle road traffic collision at Sacriston Crossroads at 7:10 this morning. 

"We dispatched a rapid response paramedic and a double-crewed ambulance. One patient was taken to University Hospital of North Durham."
