Durham Police have confirmed that one of their cars was involved in the crash on the A690 in Willington this morning.
The crash happened at 6.45am and involved a Peugeot 308 police vehicle and a Renault Megane.
The road was partially blocked this morning and pictures from the scene show extensive damage to both vehicles.
Durham Police have confirmed that their officers were responding to reports of a burglary when the crash occurred.
Nobody was injured in the crash.
A Durham Police spokesperson said: "A police car responding to an immediate response 999 call has been involved in a collision on the A690 at Low Willington this morning.
