A misspelled road marking is causing a stir after it appeared on a freshly resurfaced road.

Motorists were quick to do a double-take when they were driving over the newly painted markings on Marton Road, near Borough Road in Middlesbrough.

The freshly painted directions signal an area for motorists to ‘Keep Clear’ of, but have instead read ‘Keep Celar’.

Drivers found the funny side of the error on social media.

One said: “I’ve just drove past this. I thought it was fake but it is in fact actually on the road like this.”

Another wrote: “Celar (sic) as can be.”

While one joked: "They spelled cellar wrong."

It’s understood roadworks have been taking place in the area for the past month and the road has been resurfaced.

Middlesbrough Council has been contacted for comment.
