Reporter Darcie Rawlings and her partner visited Newcastle vegan restaurant Vegano to try their vegan kebabs that were shortlisted as finalists at the British Kebab Awards 2024, within the Best Vegan Kebab (Restaurant or Takeaway) category.

With humble beginnings, Vegano first hit the North East food scene serving from a horsebox at Newcastle Quayside Market, before moving to their the Blandford Square location in 2018.

A fantastic location on Blandford Square in Newcastle right in front of the Discovery Museum, parking for Vegano was stress-free which is relatively rare for such central locations.

The Northern Echo: The ambiance of Vegano was wonderful, with light incense burning and candles placed on each table

The ambiance of this restaurant was wonderful, with light incense burning and candles placed on each table, Vegano exuded an extremely welcoming and warm atmosphere.

With an abundant and 100% vegan menu, Vegano serves pizzas and burgers, alongside a wide array of sides such as truffle mac and cheese and starters such as carbonara arancini.

The Northern Echo: We sampled a variety of menu items at the Blandford Square restaurant

They also had a fantastic variety of cocktails to try alongside a few mocktail options for those seeking a non-alcoholic alternative.

We were there, however, for their vegan kebabs, and there were three on offer to try.

There was the Wor Dirty Doner, highlighted as a Geordie tradition and described as a ‘dirty’ kebab with salad, tomato salsa, wrapped in a handmade flatbread with chilli and garlic sauce.

There was also a vegan chicken version named the Chikn Kebab, which was strips of grilled chikn also containing salad, tomato salsa with tzatziki and chimichurri sauce also wrapped in a handmade flatbread.

There was also an option for a combination of the two including all the sauces.

We ordered one of each of the kebabs to try with the Deep Fried Ravioli to start which is served with a tomato ragu and the truffle mac and cheese as a side.

The Northern Echo: The Lychee Martini and the Amaretto Sour were fresh and fruity drink options

We also ordered an Amaretto Sour and a Lychee Martini to wash it all down which were fresh and fruity.

The service was also outstanding at Vegano, the servers were friendly and accommodating and happy to explain any menu items, which were delivered promptly and piping hot.

The Northern Echo: The Deep Fried Ravioli on a tomato sauce

The Deep Fried Ravioli were filled with a meat-style sauce and were crispy on the outside, they paired perfectly with the tomato sauce they were served with, I would certainly order this again.

The Northern Echo: The Truffle Mac and Cheese side

The truffle mac and cheese was decadent and rich and full of truffle and cheesy flavours, certainly the best vegan macaroni cheese I have ever tried.

Next came the main event, the award nominated kebabs. Served with fries and homemade coleslaw these kebabs were huge.

The Northern Echo: The 'Wor Dirty Doner' kebab

The Wor Dirty Doner was incredibly fresh and really had a meaty flavour. It lacked the greasiness of a real kebab, but this was a welcomed difference. The chilli sauce also added a hit of spice to the kebab which was wrapped in a fluffy and warm flatbread.

The Northern Echo: The 'Chickn Kebab'

The Chikn Kebab was my favourite. With the tangy tzatziki and chimichurri sauce alongside the succulent vegan chikn strips, this one was a complete and hearty winner for me.

The fries were also crispy and salty and paired great with the kebabs and the creamy coleslaw.

Our eyes were certainly bigger than our bellies gathering the size of each of the kebabs, so unsurprisingly half of the portions were wrapped up in a doggy bag to take home.

I think the worst part of my visit here was not being able to order the entire menu, and despite losing out to another restaurant in the British Kebab Awards, Vegano’s vegan take on the classic kebab hit all the right notes.

Understandably, Vegano is receiving notoriety for their food as it was completely faultless, their interesting menu and fresh flavours combined with great service and warm atmosphere provides everything you need for a brilliant dining experience.

You can find Vegano at 33a Blandford Square, Newcastle Upon Tyne or at the Quayside Market each Sunday.
