A compost fire saw firefighters fighting flames for over nine hours overnight. 

Firefighters from Cleveland Fire Brigade rushed to the scene at Haverton Hill, in Stockton, at 10pm on Sunday (March 3) following reports of a fire.

Upon arrival they found a large compost heap was "well alight", and four fire engines attended to battle the flames.

Firefighters left the scene just before 8am today (March 4) - nearly nine hours after they were called.

The circumstances of the fire are unknown.

Cleveland Fire Brigade said in a statment: "Cleveland Fire Brigade were called at 10:19pm on 03/03/2024 to an incident at Haverton Hill, Stockton. Large quantity of compost well alight.

"Four fire engines from Stockton and Thornaby attended.

"Two jets used to extinguish fire. We had left the scene by 7:34am on 04/03/2024."

Cleveland Police have confirmed they are not involved.
