Police are appealing for witnesses after a 77-year-old man sadly died after a crash in Newcastle.

The incident happened at 7.20pm yesterday (Friday, March 2). Police received reports that a black Mercedes van and a male pedestrian had been involved in a crash on Westgate Road, near the junction with Dunholme Road.

The 77-year-old man was taken to hospital where he was sadly pronounced deceased.

His next of kin have been informed and they are being supported by specially-trained officers.

The driver of the vehicle remained at the scene to assist with inquiries, and an investigation is now underway.

Sergeant Ben Rutherford, from Northumbria Police’s Motor Patrols Department, said: “This is a tragic incident in which a man has sadly died and our thoughts are with his loved ones at this extremely difficult time.

“We will continue to support them in any way we can.

“A thorough investigation is underway to establish the circumstances around the collision.

“As part of this, we have spoken to a number of witnesses and are now appealing for anyone else who was in the area at the time and saw what happened to come forward.

“We are also keen to hear from anyone who may have dashcam footage from the area at the time of the incident.”
