Plans have been submitted to Gateshead Council to convert the former Metrocentre JG Windows into an escape room and cafe lounge.

The Escapologist Ltd has applied for a ‘change of use’ to Gateshead Council for the now-shut music shop, which according to the applicant seemed to be one of the last original tenants of the shopping centre. The firm also claims the new escape rooms and bar in the Yellow Mall will create between 15 to 20 new jobs.

The plans for the conversion state that the site will eventually consist of eight themed escape rooms including a family-friendly and horror room. The new addition to the Metrocentre will open by summer this year.

Documents submitted to the council by the applicant’s agent, Lichfields, stated: “The venue, once operational, will cater for children’s parties, private functions, as well as corporate team building group and networking sessions – all of which are a weekly occurrence at existing Escapologist venues.

Visiting groups will have the opportunity to experience a unique escape room, each with their own distinctive theme, within which participants would be presented with a range of puzzles and challenges.

“Various seating and hospitality spaces would be provided throughout the venue which are capable of accommodating over 100 guests.

“The proposed development represents an excellent opportunity to expand on the Metrocentre’s existing provision of leisure uses as well as making effective use of a vacant unit.”

The report concluded: “The proposals reflect the continued investment in the Metrocentre and the need to continuously evolve and diversify the offer of goods and services”.

A spokesperson for The Escapologist Ltd said: “We are very excited to be joining the Metro Centre Scheme.”
