A County Durham town that's been branded 'the cheapest place in England' has houses going for just £5000.

According to housing agency Zoopla, it's Shildon where you will get more house for your money - with some houses on the going for just £5000.

Shildon holds the title of Britain’s budget capital. It has consistently received awards for being the most cost-effective place to live over the years.

Situated just 13 miles from Durham, Shildon is close to Bishop Auckland and has several local amenities nearby.

Even according to Rightmove, properties in Shildon had an overall average price of £83,345 over the last year.

However, after doing a trawl of Rightmove and Zoopla, houses can be as cheap as £5,000.

At this stage, it is worth noting that the houses that are available for just £5000 are auction houses - but it seems that there is little competition in these houses from what has happened in previous auctions.

The majority of sales in Shildon during the last year were terraced properties, selling for an average price of £67,277.

Semi-detached properties sold for an average of £92,019, with detached properties fetching £216,325.
