Northumbria Police officers are hoping to speak to a man in connection with an alleged sexual assault on a Metro train.

The incident took place on a Metro train travelling between Central Station and South Shields between 8.40pm and 9.30pm on Thursday, December 7.

Officers have also released an image of a man who was believed to be in the area around the time of the incident and could have information which would assist officers.

It was reported that a man had sat opposite the victim after both people got on at Central Station.

It is alleged that the same man has then made inappropriate comments and rubbed the victim's legs, threatening to follow them home.

The victim pretended they were with someone else on the train in order to deter the man, who then left South Shields Interchange heading towards King Street.

As part of their ongoing enquiries, police have today (Monday, January 15) issued an appeal to the public, asking for their assistance.

The man, or anyone knows him, is asked to contact police via the 'Report' tool on the Northumbria Police website or by calling 101, quoting crime number 151838R/23.
