A person has been taken to hospital following a serious crash in County Durham which has left the road closed whilst emergency services attend the scene.

The A183 at Bournmoor which travels towards Chester le Street has been closed off this evening since just before 4pm following a crash.

Pictures from the scene show police, ambulance and fire service attending the crash as traffic was directed southbound heading through Rose Crescent towards the A1052.

The ambulance service have now confirmed that one person was taken to hospital.

A North East Ambulance Service spokesperson said: "We were called to a road traffic collision today (11 January) at 3:50pm on the A183 in Bournmoor.

"We dispatched one ambulance crew and one clinical team leader and were supported by our colleagues at the Great North Air Ambulance Service.

"One patient was taken to Sunderland Royal Hospital."

Northumbria Police and County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service have been contacted for comment.
