A County Durham town has been named the 'cheapest place in England' after houses are appearing for as little as £45,000. 

When looking for a house, a budget could be the biggest factor - and, according to recent data, getting a house on a budget is most possible in the North of England, which is no shock at all. 

However, the County Durham location of Shildon has been named the 'cheapest place in England'.

According to housing agency Zoopla, it's Shildon where you will get more house for your money. 

Shildon holds the title of Britain’s budget capital. It has consistently received awards for being the most cost-effective place to live over the years.

Situated just 13 miles from Durham, Shildon is close to Bishop Auckland and has several local amenities nearby. 

Even according to Rightmove, properties in Shildon had an overall average price of £83,345 over the last year.

However, after doing a trawl of Rightmove and Zoopla, houses can be as cheap as £45,000.

The majority of sales in Shildon during the last year were terraced properties, selling for an average price of £67,277.

Semi-detached properties sold for an average of £92,019, with detached properties fetching £216,325.
