Two people were taken to hospital after a Christmas Day crash which saw the road closed off to motorists for a significant time.

Emergency services convened on Durham Road in Spennymoor on Monday (December 25) afternoon following reports of a crash.

Three ambulances as well as a response from the Great North Air Ambulance arrived at the scene and took two people to hospital by road. 

A North East Ambulance Service spokesperson said: "We were called to reports of a road traffic collision on Durham Road in Spennymoor shortly before 3.30pm on 25 December.

"We dispatched three ambulance crews and two clinical team leaders, and requested support from Great North Air Ambulance Service.

"One patient was taken by road to James Cook Hospital and a second patient was taken by road to University Hospital of North Durham."
