Durham Police have released shocking dashcam footage of a man on a night out wandering into a busy main road and getting hit by two cars.

He suffered 12 broken ribs and broke every bone in one of his legs.

The police are urging pedestrians to be careful with the alcohol they consume as well as drivers at this time of year.

The man in the video survived the accident in Durham town centre last month.

Durham Police are emphasising how lucky he was to only sustain the injuries that he did.

The man in the video gave permission to the police to share the footage as a warning to others this Christmas.

A Durham Police spokesperson said: "This is the moment a man makes the foolish decision to play in the road after a night out.

"Fortunately, he survived the accident in Durham City last month, but he did break twelve ribs and every bone in his leg.

"We’d call that lucky.

"In the lead up to your festive outings, we often give messages to drivers, but pedestrians need to understand that they’re just as much at risk as the person behind the wheel.

"To emphasise the critical need for caution around roads when intoxicated, the man in the footage gave us permission to release this footage, so please be kind."

Graphic Video Warning

Inspector Kevin Salter from the Durham Roads & Armed Policing Unit said: "This footage is distressing, but it's our reality.

“Just as we remind drivers of the dangers of alcohol, we also need to remind pedestrians.

"No matter how much drink you think you can handle, alcohol affects your judgement and perception.

“Every year around this time, we see a rise in fatal collisions where people have wandered into the road or attempted to get home on foot, often using unlit roads without footpaths and wearing dark clothing.

"Plan your journey home. Arrange a lift or get a taxi. Don't chance it."
