Fancy a coffee whilst you're out in Darlington? I did - so I decided to try one of the town's best rated independent coffee shops. Here's what I thought.

When you're after a hot or cold caffeinated beverage, there are many options that instantly spring to mind. Perhaps you want a Costa, Starbucks, or even just an energy drink.

However, there's always an option to visit a small coffee shop - of which Darlington has plenty to offer. A few months back, we searched online for some of the top-rated independent coffee shops in town - and thought it would be only right to go out and try what they have to offer and support local business.

I had heard many a good review about Echo 3 Coffeehouse and Roastery, a quaint coffee shop nestled in Clark's Yard that can be accessed through Skinnergate or High Row.

But, Echo 3 is not just your average coffee shop - it's Star Wars-themed. Spread across the walls are everything from Stormtrooper masks to stickers and nick-nacks, making the place feel like you've stepped into a film set collectors treasure trove.

When you step into the cosy unit you are immediately hit with the strong smell of fresh coffee beans which are turning in the corner and are stacked high in bags upon shelves.

In terms of their menu, they serve the usual suspects of cappuccinos, lattes and americanos etc. But, I was happy to see that iced latte's have a spot on their menu - as that's my go to drink.

Before I ordered, I was pleased to be greeted by the friendly team of staff, who were coping well with demand as the shop was relatively busy when I stepped in but still found time to say hello.

As I prepared to order, I was taken in by the huge collection of Star Wars memorabilia strewn across the shop and on the walls - it really makes the place feel unique.

However, that's nothing compared to the delicious treats they had on offer. I had the choice of a gingerbread millionaire slice, a mince pie slice, mince pie bakewell tart and much more.

In the end I decided to go for a chocolate brownie which also happened to be gluten free, meaning there's another option for those who have dietary requirements. My drink pick? It had to be an iced vanilla latte.

I had high hopes for the drink. I knew the coffee would be delicious based on the smell but in some shops when you ask for a syrup some baristas add one pump  and call it a day which is always hugely disappointing as you can never taste the flavouring.

But, when I took that first sip all my fears melted away as the coffee was perfect - enough sweet vanilla flavour with punchy notes of coffee to match.

The coffee blend itself is really smooth and not bitter at all even though an iced latte can often alter roast flavours.

The brownie was also a perfect afternoon treat - gooey and chocolatey as many gluten free brownies are (and it was large enough that I could split it into two portions)!

Since my first visit earlier this week, I've already returned to Echo 3 for another iced latte. I can confidently say it's my new favourite coffee spot in Darlington and I'll be a frequent visitor for a long time to come.

So if you're in town and feel yourself leaning towards a chain coffee brand, why not give an independent shop a try? It may be a decision that will pay off!
