Sixteen individuals and companies in the North East have been named and shamed by HMRC in the last 12 months for more than £1.3m worth of unpaid tax between them.

HMRC publishes details every three months of people and businesses given financial penalties for failing to comply with tax obligations or deliberately filing errors in tax returns.

Details are only released when a person or business has made at least one deliberate default on more than £25,000.

Among the biggest defaulters named and shamed in 2023 are Nigel George Hall, a Northallerton-based builder, who was charged penalties of £193,000 on almost £300,000 of defaulted tax spanning a six-year period.

And Sunderland man Lee William Davison was charged penalties of more than £63,000 for defaulted tax while trading as catering business ‘Proper Roast’

In total £1,307,397.81 of defaulted tax was racked up by 16 businesses or individuals.

Here are all of those named and shamed by HMRC this year:

Lee William Davidson

Davidson, formerly of Derwent Street, Sunderland, who traded as ‘Proper Roast’ defaulted on £63,942.99 worth of tax between April 2020 and April 2021.

He was charged penalties of the same amount.

Liam Kenneth Fairley

Bricklayer Laim Kenneth Fairley of Tilbury Road, Sunderland and formerly of Beech Avenue, Houghton-le-Spring racked up a total of £35,357 of defaulted tax.

He defaulted during a three-year period between April 2018 and April 2021, and was charged penalties of £23,512.39.

Kyle David Morrison

Morrison, a builder formerly of Priory Close, Guisborough and Egglestone Court, Skelton in Cleveland, defaulted on £35,695.71 of tax over two spells between April 2018 and April 2019, and then April 2020 and April 2021.

Morrison was charged penalties of £21,238.93.

Nigel George Hall

Nigel George Hall defaulted on a massive £299,136.50 of tax/duties between 2012 and 2018.

The Northallerton-based builder, of East Cowton, was charged penalties of £193,690.87.

Paul Parkin

Roofer Paul Parking, formerly of Sycamore Grove, Willington, racked up defaulted tax totalling £67,068.32 between April 2019 and the same month in 2021 trading as D L Roofing.

He was charged penalties of £42,976.78

Mohammed Jalil Sharif, also known as Jalil Sharif

Sharif, formerly of Hildyard Row, Catterick and trading as Pizza Pronto defaulted on £88,157.50 of tax/duties over a five-year spell from July 2016 to June 2021. He was charged £42,976.78 of penalties.

Alan Waggott

Haulage boss Alan Waggott defaulted on £50,580.41 of tax between April 2015 and the same month of 2020 trading as Alan Waggott Haulage.

Waggott, formerly of Belle Vue, Crook, was charged penalties of £26,554.69

In 2018 he was fined £6,007 after pleading guilty to various environmental offences including illegally landfilling waste.

Afghan Grill House

The Afghan Grill House restaurant, based on Stanton Street, Fenham in Newcastle’s West failed to pay £31,186.57 of tax during a one-year spell between April 2020 and April 2021.

Bosses were charged £28,847.57 in penalties.

Derek McElvaney

Landscape gardener Derek McElvaney, of Jackson Drive Stokesley, Middlesbrough defaulted on £54,775.81 worth of tax between April 2015 and April 2020.

He was charged penalties of £31,876.42.

Haytrax Ltd

Machinery repair company Haytrax Ltd, formerly based at Borough Road, Middlesbrough and a site in Ipswich racked up a total of £193,844 of defaulted tax.

It defaulted the mammoth amount over the course of a year between January 2021 and the same month in 2022. It was charged penalties of £132,298.52.

Andrew William Cox

Cox, an energy consultant and writer, trading as ‘Energy intelligence and marketing research’ defaulted on £147,655 of tax over ten years between November 2011 and January 2020.

The Newcastle-based consultant, based on Sandyford Road, will have to pay penalties for the entire amount.

Northern Bespoke Developments Ltd

Construction holding company Northern Bespoke Developments Ltd defaulted on £84,983 worth of tax between May 2015 and April 2016.

The firm, based on Ayton Road in Stokesley, Middlesbrough, was charged penalties of £40,154.40.

Tolga Vural

The Tolga Vural takeaway, formerly known as Pizza Bello, on Eddison Road in Washington, defaulted on £59,122 of tax between July 2018 and October the following year.

The failure to pay has landed them with penalties of £27,935.14.

BMB Corrosion Prevention Consultancy Ltd

Newcastle-based consultancy firm BMB Corrosion Prevention Consultancy Ltd was previously based at the Blyth Workspace and failed to pay £43,400 of tax between April 2020 and April 2022. Bosses will have to pay penalties of the same amount.

Iffy’s Food Limited

Iffy’s Food Limited proved to have iffy tax affairs when the takeaway, based on Dovecot Street, Stockton, defaulted on £26,723 of tax.

The tax was due between September 2018 and October 2019 and the firm, which previously traded as Iffy’s Takeaway, will have to pay £12,626.61.

Simona Turcan

Simona Turcan, of Byelands Street, Middlesbrough, failed to pay £25,770 of tax on income from employment.

Turcan, formerly of Park Lane, Middlesbrough, has been charged penalties of £18,039.
