A Willington woman has been ordered to pay £726 after leaving her garden in a state, abandoning furniture and white goods in her yard.

Her case was heard at Peterlee Magistrates Court on Tuesday this week (December 5). The tenant left the garden in a haphazard state for weeks even after receiving two warnings from SW13 requesting the waste to be removed.

The waste left to rot in the yard was set on fire in the garden by unknown persons, meters from other residential properties.

The fire brigade did have to attend to put out the blaze,  and Durham County Council removed the waste.

After this case was heard by magistrates, the council has reminded residents they can organise a bulky waste collection through Durham County Council.
