A County Durham town's residents watched on in freezing temperatures as festive lights lit up a magical evening on Friday (December 1).

Barnard Castle's town centre was illuminated as part of its Christmas Light switch on event this year.

Residents flocked to the streets to admire the visuals across the town centre, Lower Galgate, The Bank and Newgate.

The display consisted of icicle and festoon lighting, Christmas tree lights, and other displays.

The event was delivered by Barnard Castle Christmas Lights as it again undertook the responsibility after starting in 2018.

A BCCL spokesperson said: "Wow, what a turnout!

"Huge thanks to all at TCR The Hub for organising such an incredible switch on event."
