The owner of a multi-award winning restaurant which for more than two decades has brought visitors and locals to another part of the UK has opened a venue in the North East.

Chef and restauranteur Jay Alam, who has placed Coventry and Warwickshire on the culinary map with his Indian fine dining restaurant Turmeric Gold winning the praise of Michelin star chef Glyn Purnell, is now set to extend his footprint to the North East with Amaze Gourmet Spice in Whitley Bay.

Opening its doors earlier this month, Jay is aiming to replicate his success with an 'authentic dining experience not found anywhere else'.

With elegant décor, Amaze has been purposefully designed by Jay himself to provide guests with the ultimate experience of the Indian palaces.

Among the unique features are the quintessential Maharaja Quarters, which take their inspiration from India’s Maharajas and Maharanis.

With drapes, cushions and low lighting the Maharaja Quarters offer couples an intimate setting which doubles up as a perfect retreat away from the hustle and bustle of the main restaurant.

As well as a main menu, guests can choose from a five-course, seven-course or 10-course menu, all filled with dishes that come with a twist.

Dishes such as the Duck Mango Glazed Shashlick with Anorosh - a blend of pineapple, Kashmiri spice, green peppers and mango glaze, or the Malai Drumstick Korma with Puff Bread – a curry flavoured with roasted ginger, garlic, coriander, mint, coconut and almond.

The Indian Kulfi and Apple Crumble dessert features cardamon apple crumble with home made Indian ice cream.

A chef’s table – a large window looking from the restaurant into the kitchen – allows guests to see their food being cooked fresh.

Mr Alam said: “For more than two decades Turmeric Gold has been a labour of love where every day we strive to continue improving our offering to tantalise our guests’ tastebuds and create a true, authentic Indian experience not matched anywhere else.

“Already Amaze has been really well received by the people of Whitley Bay and we are looking forward to replicating the success we have had with Turmeric Gold and building on our culinary achievements for all to enjoy.”

Over the years Jay has racked up over 30 prestigious awards ranging from a Travellers’ Choice Award placing his facility among the world’s top 10 per cent of restaurants.

Descending from a catering family Jay’s ambition to own his own restaurant began in his early childhood when he developed a passion for cooking delicious, healthy meals.

He opened Turmeric Gold in 2001 and what started as a popular haunt among Indian food lovers in Coventry has grown to become a jewel in the Midlands’ crown, widely enjoyed by diners from across the world, particularly those interacting with the region’s business community.

The opening of Amaze has come in the face of adversity with Jay battling a two-year battle with cancer.

Jay said: “For more than two decades Turmeric Gold has been a labour of love where every day we strive to continue improving our offering to create a true, authentic Indian experience not matched anywhere else.

“I am really looking forward to replicating our success with Amaze and showing the people of the Northeast just what we can do.”
