A man in his 50s has been confirmed to have died following a heavy police presence that cordoned off a North East cemetery in the early hours of Saturday (November 25).

Police have confirmed the man was found dead at Gateshead East Cemetery just after 7:30am following a concerned call for the welfare of a person on the grounds.

A full cordon was in place upon the grounds for several hours whilst officers attended the scene off Milvain Street.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene, and the force do not believe the death to be suspicious.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “At around 7.35am yesterday (Saturday) police received a report of concern for the welfare of a person within Gateshead East Cemetery on Milvain Street in Gateshead.

“Emergency services attended the scene and found a man in his 50s who was sadly confirmed as deceased. His next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specially-trained officers.

“Police do not believe the death to be suspicious or that there was any third-party involvement. A report will be made for the coroner.”
