An outdoor ice rink has opened in the North East in time for the Christmas season - part of a wider programme of festive activities.

The outdoor ice rink at the Life Science Centre in Newcastle opened for the festive season with a figure skating performance.

Newcastle University’s Figure Skating Society put on a show this weekend at the ice rink in Times Square to the classic tune of Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree.

Life’s ice rink is an annual addition to the city’s Christmas calendar, attracting families and skaters from across the county for some festive fun.

Anouk Nesbit, president of Newcastle University’s Figure Skating Society, said: “Our society was very excited to skate at Life’s ice rink and we all had a great time skating outdoors. It was amazing to start the winter period in such a festive way.”

Made of real ice, there are sessions available at the rink to book for large groups, or relaxed skating sessions where lighting and noise levels are adjusted for those with sensory needs.

Life Science Centre run an annual family-friendly Christmas programme too, including a new 360-degree animated dome show, and a live theatre performance where fire burns underwater and ice makes water boil.
