Hundreds of people flocked to Sunderland's Keel Square on Thursday (November 16) to attend the Christmas Light switch featuring a former Emmerdale actress.

Donning Santa hats, elf ears and other festive outfits, the crowds were in high spirits to see the city's light display at an official ceremony.

The spectacular display saw the Mayor of Sunderland, Councillor Dorothy Trueman, and also Metro Radio's Steve and Karen, and former Emmerdale star Charlie Hardwick on the stage.

A countdown to the switch-on marked the official start of Christmas in Sunderland - while entertainment and music also featured at the event.
