County Durham's art biennial is back to light up the night once again when it officially kicks off tomorrow - here's a sneak peek of what you can expect this year.

It is less than 24 hours until Lumiere, Durham's light art festival begins for 2023 where it is set to dazzle and delight visitors from November 16-19.

Over 40 pieces of artwork by visionaries from 14 countries will be lit up and on display across the city from the historic cathedral to the marketplace as some pieces making their UK premiere.

This year is also the first where Bishop Auckland's town centre will be included in the festivities, where from 4:30pm to 11pm each night visitors will view a nocturnal art experience like no other.

On display for the preview of Lumiere this evening was Javier Riera’s Liquid Geometry, lighting up the cathedrals green with intricate and hypnotic patterns that moved across the buildings.

Inside, Ai Weiwei’s Illuminated Bottle Rack (2018) lit up the Cathedral’s 11th-century Chapter House - which reportedly was delivered piece by piece in over 60 boxes.

Inside, the Cathedral Nave has been transformed with Montréal-based Mexican artist Rafael Lozano-Hemmer’s colossal immersive work Pulse Topology (2021).

Light bulbs strung from the ceiling move in wave-like patterns, as pulse-sensitive sensors activated by visitors' hands pick up heartbeats which are then played through speakers.
