A County Durham village has been left with the aftermath of overnight flash flooding which has severely impacted local businesses and closed multiple roads.

Lanchester in County Durham has been hit with a flash flood following a bout of heavy rainfall yesterday (October 28) and much of the area is impassable due to water.

Pictures from the village show emergency services at the scene, standing in the leg deep water whilst local business owners attempt to clear up the aftermath of the flood.

Durham Constabulary confirmed this morning that emergency services are at the scene and have closed much of the village centre off to the public.

A spokesperson said: "Emergency services are currently dealing with flooding in Lanchester, which has resulted in the closure of most of the roads in the village, including the A691 in both directions.

Cockerton Village in Darlington has ankle deep flood water and four roads across the county including Hamsteels Lane, west of Esh and Wallnook Lane, Langley Park are known to be closed.

Transport has also been affected, with trains between Darlington and County Durham are also running at a reduced speed and will face delays.
