Aldi has announced it plans to open one of its newest stores in County Durham before Christmas this year.

It comes as the supermarket recently opened its 1,000th store last month in Woking, with 12 others now only weeks away.

Aldi says on average it will be opening one new UK store a week between now and the end of the year, creating around 40 jobs per shop.

The company is also still looking to build new sites in Newcastle and South Shields.

The new store located at Portrack Lane in Stockton is listed among those opening soon but the exact date is yet to be announced.

New stores in Taunton and Oldham will open in October, following the opening of three new stores - in Slough, Torquay and Cannock last week.

Meanwhile, towns such as Farnborough and West Bridgford are set to see new Aldi stores open in November.

The openings form part of Aldi’s long-term target of 1,500 stores, with the supermarket set to invest £1.4 billion in expanding its UK footprint over the next two years.
