An idyllic and quaint village an hour's drive from Darlington has been named among the most picturesque in the world - but those that live there have highlighted that it can sometimes be 'far from ideal'.

While the UK may not enjoy the same weather as warmer parts of the world, it does boast idyllic villages like Staithes on the seaside in North Yorkshire

As part of the list, which was made by Faraway Furniture, the most beautiful village in the world was named Cinque Terres, which boasts tourists from around the world on the Italian Riviera.

But a little closer to home, Staithes took 17th place.

The seaside location was once one of the largest fishing ports in the UK and is now also an ideal staycation destination for families.

It is full of character and tourists can get lost among its winding cobbled streets or head out one of Yorkshire’s cliff paths.

Walkers can base themselves in Staithes to explore the Cleveland Way National Trail, a 109-mile route across the breathtaking Yorkshire coast.

A tourist who visited Staithes Beach wrote on Tripadvisor: “This place is a little gem. I would definitely recommend it.”

Another visitor wrote: “We just love it here. It’s beautiful. It’s so nice to go somewhere that hasn’t been overtaken by the usual high street chains and it remains a little local community.”

However, since the flattering rankings were revealed, those who live in Staithes have been sharing their 'realities' of living there - with some calling it 'far from ideal.

The first thing that residents have flagged is that it can seem like a 'ghost town' in the 'off season' while appearing 'too crammed' when its tourist seasons, with some believing there's no 'middle ground'.

One person, who wished to remain anonymous, lives in Staithes, but wanted to let people know about the village that has been voted one of the most picturesque in the world.

They said: "It might seem quaint and lovely to visitors and tourists, but you end up with such a silent location or one where you need to escape on the busiest weekends.

"Some might say to us that we should enjoy the tourism, which we do, but not all tourists are respectful of our homes."

Meanwhile, plenty of people have also been sharing their views on social media, with one person saying: "Staithes is beautiful - it deserves to be on the list," while another added: "We love visiting Staithes, it's a true gem of the coastline."
