A North Yorkshire country house hosted a rather unique celebration of fruit last weekend that involved visitors attempting to throw apples across a river.
Newby Hall in Ripon marked the start of British Apple Month on Sunday (October 1) with the annual international apple throwing championships.
Over 1,000 people attended the event this year at the hall, which is well known in North Yorkshire for its 50 varieties of the apple present in the orchard.

Between 1 and 3pm, ambitious attendees tried their hardest to throw apples across the River Ure in an attempt to win the coveted title and silver apple trophy.
This year, visitors were also asked to bring along their best apple creations to be judged by a panel of culinary professionals.
Pies, jellies, drinks and cakes were all part of the mix, with Hattie Colwell winning first place in the competition for her creation.
As for the apple throwing, Aidan Morgan, a University of York student was the champion.
Other apple-themed activities included apple pressing demonstrations, cider tasting, a display of some of the heritage apple varieties grown in Newby’s orchards and apple growing advice by the Northern Fruit Group.
