Northern Echo readers have had their say this week on the pubs and bars they miss from around the region - here are some of their picks.

We all have a favourite watering hole from times gone by, and whether they closed down two or 20 years ago, they still hold fond memories.

Whether they are in Darlington or County Durham, many pubs have closed their doors over the years due to the cost of living crisis.

To find out which venues were missed the most, we asked Northern Echo readers to name pubs from around the region that they miss.

Here are five of our reader's picks.

1. Route 66, Darlington

Route 66 was a popular mention from many of our readers. The venue was one of the few late-night licenced bars in Darlington and was well-known for its dancefloor.

2. Plastered Parrot, Darlington

Darlington's Plastered Parrot on Commercial Street faced demolition in 2021 after it suffered a fire in 2020 after it was victim to a fire.

The former club, which first opened its doors to Darlington in the 1970s, had remained vacant for the past decade after its stint as Audio.

The iconic venue had been previously known under names including Zhivagos, Oscar's, Emmy's, the Plastered Parrot, The Lounge and Cactus Jack's.

3. Monaco, Bishop Auckland

Monaco in Bishop Auckland was clearly a popular destination on Market Place in the town.

Inside, the venue was themed with black ceilings and carpets, after closing around 2016.

4. The Royal Oak, Darlington

The Royal Oak has since been demolished after this photo was taken of the building in 2009 on Google Maps, following its closure in 2008.

It was demolished as part of the University Campus scheme and was used for fire brigade exercises in 2010.

5. Caledonian, Darlington

The Caledonian used to reside at 72 High Northgate in Darlington, before closing in 2009.

According to Google Maps, the venue was still vacant in 2020.
