A spoof TikTok offering users a chance to win a trip to Houghton-le-Spring using scenic fake videos from other parts of the world has gone viral.

The video, posted two days ago by an account named Brit's Travel Diary jokingly claims to offer followers the chance to win a trip to the town yet uses clips from entirely different parts of the world to promote it.

In the video, viewed over 1.5 million times, users are shown clips of a scenic train ride, a lake, a mountain hike, friends sipping drinks on a balcony bar and a waterfall heading down a hill into grassy plains.

Text placed on top of the clips says: "I thought England was boring until I got here...", then claims to show users what the town is really like.

It then reads: "Follow to win a trip to Houghton-le-Spring."

Over 1,500 people have since commented on the original TikTok including many Houghton-le-Spring residents asking where in the town the video clips are from.

One local said: "I'm from Houghton and can confirm the closest thing we have to this is the Wetherspoons."

Another said: "I wish Houghton was like that! I'm surprised they didn't show how beautiful the local Lidl or Hetton and the Lane as they are scenic too."
