Amazon has today announced that recruitment has opened for new staff at its £450 million centre in Stockton.

The new recruits will pick, pack and ship customer orders at the state-of-the-art fulfilment centre which opens next month.

The 464,000 sq. ft centre will launch with up to 1,000 employees when it begins handling customer orders, growing to 2,000 people.

The new building at Wynyard Park is the latest generation fulfilment centre featuring three floors of Amazon Robotics technology.

Stockton is Amazon’s fourth fulfilment centre in the North East of England following the opening of centres in Darlington in May 2020, Durham in September 2020 and Gateshead in September 2021.

The 2,000 new jobs created will take Amazon’s total workforce in the North East to 6,000 full and part-time roles, and the company’s investment in the region to more than £1.7 billion since 2010.

Site Leader of Amazon Stockton, Richard Griffiths, said: “We are excited to be recruiting new permanent jobs offering competitive wages and comprehensive benefits starting on day one.

"The new robotics fulfilment centre is a further sign of our commitment to the communities in which we operate and I am looking forward to the weeks and months ahead as we grow our team by employing talented individuals in a range of roles from Stockton and the surrounding area.”

In addition to competitive pay, all employees at the Stockton-on-Tees fulfilment centre will also be offered a comprehensive benefits package, including private medical insurance, life assurance, income protection, subsidised meals and an employee discount – which combined are worth thousands of pounds annually – as well as a company pension plan.

Like all fulfilment centres in the UK, employees caring for school-age children, including parents, guardians and grandparents, will also be able to apply for term-time working. Amazon’s new contract guarantees time off during the six-week Summer break, as well as each two-week holiday period at Easter and Christmas, with all other benefits remaining the same.

Amazon has invested over £56 billion in the UK since 2010, including more than £12bn in 2022 alone, and recently announced plans to open another fulfilment centre in Sutton Coldfield, West Midlands, next month, creating 400 additional new jobs for the region.
