A man has sadly been pronounced dead at a North East gym after emergency services rushed to the scene to try and save his life.

Emergency services were at the scene at PureGym, Sunderland Retail Park before 5am this morning (September 15) responding to concerns for the welfare of a man.

Tragically, despite the best efforts of the ambulance service, the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “Shortly before 4.45am this morning (Friday), we received a report from the ambulance service of concern for the welfare of a man at a commercial premises in Roker, Sunderland.

“Emergency services attended and despite the best efforts of paramedics, the man was sadly pronounced deceased a short time later.

“Police do not believe the death to be suspicious or that there was any third-party involvement. A report will be made for the coroner.”

The North East Ambulance Service has also confirmed they attended the incident.

A spokesperson said: “We were called to a person unwell at PureGym, Sunderland Retail Park, just after 4.30 this morning.

“We dispatched a double crewed ambulance, specialist paramedic, rapid response paramedic and a clinical team leader.”

Following the incident, PureGym has announced in a Facebook post that the gym will be closed until further notice.

Their statement reads: “Please be advised, we are currently closed. An update will be shared when we open again.

“While we are closed, members are able to train at all Newcastle clubs using their existing PINs to gain entry.

“We apologise for the inconvenience, and thank your for your understanding.”
