Armed police converged in force on a North East estate after a man was allegedly assaulted while he was working in the street, police have confirmed.

Residents were shocked to see dozens of officers descend on Dunoon Close, in Ragworth, Stockton, at about 5.20pm on Thursday.

The estate was in lockdown for nearly half an hour as up to a dozen police vehicles converged on the scene.

Officers surrounded a house on the street, but a young boy was later seen coming around the corner in the road with his hands in the air, to give himself up.

Cleveland Police spokesperson said today (Friday, September 15): “A 51-year-old man was assaulted on Dunoon Close in Stockton at around 5pm yesterday evening whilst he was working in the street.

“The van he was driving was also damaged during the incident.

“ A 16-year-old boy was arrested on suspicion of attempted section 18 assault and criminal damage and is currently in police custody for questioning.”

One eyewitness, who did not wish to be named, said to the Northern Echo: "It was like watching something out of the Police Interceptor television show. The whole estate was locked down. You couldn't get in or out.

"There were several police Armed Response Vehicles on the scene with officers with their guns drawn. It was surreal to see. And there were dogs everywhere.

"There was also a drone above monitoring everything. There were vans and cars too - nearly a dozen units in all."

He added: "Officers surrounded a property in the street, both at the back and front.

"But a lad came around the corner (with his hands up) and handed himself in. They arrested him and took him away."
