A thug who downed vodka and took cocaine was back behind bars a week after he was released from custody was branded ‘disgusting’ after he spat in the face of several emergency workers.

Police were called when Lewis Bell stripped his top off started to try and fight people in the street when he became agitated.

The 25-year-old threw two bottles at officers before locking himself inside a house on Somerset Road, Stockton.

Christopher Morrison, prosecuting, told Teesside Crown Court how officers forced their way into the property before finding the defendant hiding in the loft.

“As he was taken out of the door, he spat at one of the officers and kicked out at another – he was arrested for affray.

“When he was taken to the station, he headbutted an officer in the chest area. While he was in his cell, he was unresponsive and an ambulance was called,” he said.

“He was taken to the ambulance and spat at two paramedics, hitting both of their faces.

“He then spat in the face of another officer and hit another on the shoulder.”

The court heard how the defendant had been recalled on licence to prison as a result of his offending on August 19 this year.

Bell, of no fixed abode, pleaded guilty to seven charges of assault on an emergency worker, a public order offence and possession of the Class A drug cocaine.

Emma Williams, mitigating, said her client had only been out of custody for a week when he was arrested.

She added: “When he was released, he was told there was a place for him in a hostel but there wasn’t and he ended up being homeless.

“During that he had drank vodka and taken cocaine.”

Judge Timothy Stead locked Bell up for a total of 16 months for all offences.

He said: “A number of police officers were assaulted by you and to make it worse you also assaulted two paramedics.

“Spitting in your chosen method of assaulting and insulting people.

“Your conduct is regarded as disgusting and intolerable – an immediate custodial sentence is the only recourse for you.”
