YOUNG football fans at a North-East school could see good attendance rewarded with a trip to see their local team play.

Children at Skerne Park Academy, in Darlington, can earn the chance to win tickets to Darlington Football Club home games if they achieve 100 per cent attendance, thanks to a donation of season tickets.

Barry Thompson, manager of Darlington FC Foundation, visited the school to challenge the kids on their Darlington FC knowledge and football skills, rewarding the pupils’ efforts with two season tickets to be used by pupils and their families.

Headteacher Clair Gooding said: “We’re very grateful to Darlington FC Foundation for once again making this kind donation. Every child in our school who maintains perfect attendance will be entered into a draw to win the tickets for each Darlo game.

“We hope this will not only help to boost learning and attendance, but also help foster an interest in sport and pride in their home team.”

Barry said: “People watch football on television so much nowadays that actually going to a match has become a thing of the past for many. But what we want to show is that it’s not just about the 90 minutes; it’s the whole atmosphere, it’s being there and being part of it, and there’s nothing quite like backing your local team on matchday.

“When I was ten, someone came into my school to talk about Darlington Football Club, and that made me a Darlo fan for life. I’ve been a season ticket holder for more than 30 years because of that, and I’ve had some amazing times through all the ups and downs.

“I hope that this campaign will help more children discover a love of sport and make them want to get behind their local team, and I think Skerne Park Academy’s plan to use it as a reward for excellent attendance is a great idea.”
