Buildings were evacuated and a road was closed after a fire at a four-storey building broke out in Newcastle this morning (September 12). 

Emergency services were called to Newgate Road in the city centre at around 5.55am, following reports of smoke coming from a building on the stretch of road. 

Four fire engines were sent to the scene, with the fire extinguished by 7am.

Northumbria Police sealed off Newgate Road during the incident to allow emergency crews to work, and have since confirmed that no one was injured in the incident.

The road was reopened at around 7.45am.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “Shortly before 6am today (Tuesday) we received a report of a fire at a block of flats on Westgate Road, Newcastle city centre.

“Emergency services attended the scene and those inside the building were evacuated.

“A section of the road was closed while firefighters put out the blaze, which was completed a short time later.

“No one is believed to have been injured in the incident and Westgate Road has now fully re-opened.”

Firefighters remain on the scene of the building fire to allow for investigation work.

Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service have confirmed that four engines were called to the scene; one crew from Fossway, two from Gateshead, one from Swalwell, and an area ladder platform from Gosforth were in attendance.
