A primary school in County Durham will be closed on Monday due to severe flooding.

St Joseph's RCVA Primary School on Front Street in Stanley is expected to reopen on Tuesday.

Flood waters have affected the school after torrential rain swepts across the region.

Roads in the town were impassable and the nearby Asda store also flooded.

A statement on Durham County Council’s website said: “The school will close on Monday, 11 September 2023 (All day ) and re-open on Tuesday, 12 September 2023 (Morning ).

“Reason for closure: Due to Severe Flooding.”
