Torrential downpours have caused flash flooding across the region.

Heavy rain showers on Sunday afternoon have made some roads impassable and closed a station on the Tyne and Wear Metro station.

Pictures posted on social media show drains unable to cope with the deluge in the Stanley area of County Durham.

Chichester Metro station is now closed, and trains are exceptionally busy today due to the Great North Run.

A spokesperson for Nexus, which operates the network, said: “Customers are advised to allow everyone space to board.

“We are running a revised timetable today. Keep the windows open to circulate fresh air.”
