Darlington’s Wilko branch is continuing their closing sale as the retailer has confirmed that redundancies from the company have been put on hold whilst they consider rescue offers.

Pictures from inside Wilko on East Street, Darlington, show further sales are taking place as the future of the company remains unknown.

Everything from homeware to décor has been reduced to clear, despite the fact that the final closing date of the store has not been confirmed.

Wilko operates fourteen locations across the region, including stores in Durham, Middlesbrough, Peterlee and Hartlepool.

Following the news that the retail giant had entered administration at the start of August, several rescue efforts have been launched, including an offer from a Canadian businessman who bought HMV.

A second last-minute bid was launched on August 27 to save the retailer which has over 400 stores across the UK that employ around 12,000 people.

Wilko Chief Executive Officer Mark Jackson previously revealed the company expected to enter insolvency after failing to secure a takeover to help the business with “mounting cash pressures”.

He added: “Unfortunately, with this in mind, today we’re having to take the difficult decision to file a notice of intention.

“We’ll continue to progress discussions with interested parties with the aim of completing a transaction which preserves the business and will encourage those interested parties we’re in discussions with to move as fast as possible.”

Wilko filed a notice of intention to appoint administrators at the High Court on Thursday, August 3.
