This is the moment  mystery object was filmed as it flew straight into a well in County Durham.

Ralph Thompson, 66, couldn’t understand what had happened to damage the well in his garden in Consett.

He suspected that local children might have accidentally damaged it when looking at the fish inside it but when he watched back his CCTV footage he couldn’t believe his eyes.

The CCTV captured the moment a bolt of light strikes the side of Ralph’s well and then a spray of water can be seen from the leak.

Ralph explained how shocked he was when he watched the footage back.

The 66-year-old said: “I made the well on my land many years ago and put fish in it.

“The other day two of my neighbours came round to tell me that the water in the well was going down.

“When I went down for a look there was only about four inches of water left.

“I just couldn’t imagine what had happened.

“I thought maybe some kids had damaged it by accident when they were looking at the fish.

“I went into the house and looked back at what the security cameras had seen.

“It was the middle of the day and you can just see a streak of light hit the side of the well.

“You can see all the water squirting out of the well after it hit.”

Ralph explained that he's examined the object and believes it could be a meteorite - now he's hoping someone can verify what it is.

He added: “I went and found the meteorite, it’s not huge but it weighs about 1.89 grams.

“The outside of the rock has bubbles on but I broke off a bit and the inside is incredibly smooth and shiny.

“I’m hoping to get it tested somewhere so that I’ve got proof it was a meteorite and to learn more about it.”
