A fare dodger who failed to pay for a rail ticket between Bishop Auckland and Darlington has been ordered to pay £211 in a fine and costs.

The case against Holly Gawler, 26 Hutchinson Close, Coundon, Bishop Auckland, was heard at South Yorkshire Magistrates' Court.

Gawler pleaded guilty to failing to produce a rail ticket on request.

According to court documents,  Gawler boarded a train at Bishop Auckland on Monday January 23, without a valid ticket or a promise to pay notice - despite the availability of ticket purchasing facilities at the station.

As a result, she made the journey to Darlington without paying the fare.

The railway company's officer or servant requested Gawler to show proof of payment or pay the fare, but Gawler failed to comply.

Consequently, Gawler was issued a Penalty Fare Notice for £100, which would have reduced to £50 if paid within 21 days.

Despite reminders and communication from the railway company, Gawler neither paid the fare nor submitted an appeal.

As a result, the unpaid fare of £5 remains outstanding, and the railway company is soughtcompensation of this amount along with £150.

A collection order has been made to ensure payment.
