The first signs of Darlington’s new £150m train station taking shape have emerged as building of the steel structure has started.

The first steels in the station's major overhaul have appeared, with drone pictures showing progress on the new east side entrance hall and car park structures.

Work on the foundations began in June and the metal frame, made of British steel is now being installed.

The improvements will see a new multi-storey car park with space for 600 vehicles, two new platforms, a new entrance on Victoria Road and entrance hall.

It is hoped the project will be complete for 2025 – the 200th anniversary of the Stockton and Darlington Railway.

Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen said: “I am delighted to see that British Steel has gone in for our redevelopment of the east side of Darlington station where we’re building a new station entrance, a new car park and two new platforms.

“While it's taken a long time to secure the cash needed and get plans approved, we're now on with the job, and it's good to see no time being wasted to get it built and up and running.
