A blaze that broke out at a North East Primary School last night (August 13) has been confirmed to have caused significant damage, the fire service has confirmed.

Emergency services rushed to Brougham Primary School in Hartlepool last night after a fire was reported just before 10pm.

Firefighters battled the flames on Brougham Terrace for hours using three appliances, leaving the scene in the early hours of this morning.

Cleveland Fire Brigade has now confirmed that part of the building has been damaged, including a large amount of smoke damage to the nursery.

A statement from the log reads: "10% fire damage and 100% smoke damage to the nursery. Light smoke damage to the remainder of the school.

"2 breathing apparatus 1 hose reel, positive pressure ventilation and thermal image camera in use."

Following the incident, Brougham Terrace remains closed off to motorists.

AA Traffic Maps state: "Road closed due to building fire on Brougham Terrace both ways between Milbank Road and Lancaster Road."

Cleveland Police have confirmed that enquiries are underway to determine the cause of the fire.

A spokesperson said: "We are currently investigating a fire at the primary school and enquiries are ongoing to determine the cause of the fire."
