The fire service have branded a second fire in as many as weeks at a derelict North East hotel as completely unacceptable.

Cleveland Fire Brigade (CFB) are appealing for more information after attending a second fire at the former Golden Eagle Hotel in Thornaby on Monday (July 31).

They said they believe the fire was started deliberately and called it "completely unacceptable" and "irresponsible."

The service confirmed they deployed seven fire engines, from Coulby Newham, Hartlepool , Middlesbrough, Thornaby and Saltburn, to the scene.

A CFB spokesperson said: "An incredible response from our crews and control room staff last night (31/07) who responded to a fire at the former Golden Eagle Hotel in Thornaby.

"We had seven fire engines in attendance from Coulby Newham, Hartlepool , Middlesbrough, Thornaby and Saltburn who tackled the blaze which is believed to have been started deliberately.

"Crews used two Hose Reels and Positive Pressure Ventilation (PPV) at the incident which started when a pile of rubbish on fire had spread to the derelict hotel’s entrance, this resulted in significant damage to the building.

"Huge well done to our Firefighters who got the fire under control within an hour before leaving the scene around 22.40pm.

"This is the second fire at the derelict hotel we have attended in two weeks and it is completely unacceptable, irresponsible and diverts our resources away from emergencies where lives may be at risk."
